Beatriz Neila stormed to two super-strong third-place podiums for Ampito Crescent Yamaha at Cremona Circuit in Italy, during the second round of the FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship.
After qualifying in fourth-place on Friday afternoon, Neila was in the perfect position to capitalise come Race 1 on Saturday. The 23-year-old made a good start to run consistently in third throughout the race and close in on the front runners to be a part of the vital final-lap fight, but crossed the line just 0.2s out of reach, taking the final spot on the rostrum.
However, her second-fastest race lap time saw the opportunity to start from P2 and the front row of the grid on Sunday, and Neila took a step to stay well in touch with eventual race winner Maria Herrera across the full 12-lap race distance. Neila made a brave move on the outside in the final sector for the victory, but was unable to make the pass stick – with Herrera retaking the lead and as Neila was pushed wide, Roberta Ponziani just pipped Neila to second place.
The close fight means Neila lies just 13 points shy of the lead in the title standings, the double podium keeping her championship hopes well in sight for Ampito Crescent Yamaha with the next round to run from 11-13 July at Donington Park, UK.
Beatriz Neila – SP: P4 / Race 1: P3 / Race 2: P3
“I’m happy because I ran a good race, better than Saturday, and my feeling with the bike was better. I tried in the last sector to get past Maria but in the end, I finished third. I’m very happy anyway, as the result is important for the championship standings. I want to thank the whole team and all our partners who support us. We’re second in the championship with more points than we had at this point last year, so I’m happy, and proud because I’ve made a good step. I’ll work hard over the next weeks to be as strong as possible for the next round at Donington.”
