MEET THE RIDERS

JR Portrait.png

Quite simply the most successful rider in FIM Superbike World Championship history. With 119 wins, 263 podiums and six titles over 16 years of WorldSBK competition, Jonathan Rea is a household name in the championship, and enters 2025 riding the Official Yamaha R1 WorldSBK for the second year with Crescent.

Rea’s focus for the new season ahead remains steadfast – while working to further improve himself and concentrate on his craft, the Northern Irishman is eager to once again deliver the remarkable results and outstanding consistency that has stamped his name in the series history books.

“JR” began his racing career in motocross, with aspirations of becoming a World Champion on the dirt. Road racing soon came calling however, and in 2003 he swapped to tarmac when he started competing at National Championship level.

By 2007, Rea had already made a big impression in the UK, finishing runner-up in the British Superbike Championship before progressing to the FIM Supersport World Championship in 2008. A season-long fight for the championship ensued with teammate Andrew Pitt (now his Pata Prometeon Yamaha #65 Crew Chief). Though the title went the way of his Australian rival, Rea did enough to earn a graduation to the FIM Superbike World Championship class for 2009.

Trophies soon followed for Rea as he went on to score his maiden WorldSBK podium at Kyalami and maiden victory at Misano in a memorable debut season. Four wins in 2014 resulted in third in the championship, before a manufacturer switch in 2015 led to great success and an unprecedented six consecutive FIM Superbike World Championship titles that sealed his place in motorcycling history.

2021 witnessed an epic battle between Rea and then-Yamaha rider Toprak Razgatlioglu for the title – a fight in which Razgatlioglu and Crescent Racing emerged victorious at the final round of the season in Indonesia.

The subsequent two seasons brought more wins and podiums for Rea but no titles, and in 2024 he swapped manufacturer for the first time since 2015 to join Crescent and Pata Prometeon Yamaha, seeking new challenges and the opportunity to add to the imperious tally that has made him a legend of the sport.

Outside his record-breaking WorldSBK career, Rea is a two-time winner of the prestigious Suzuka 8H race and made his MotoGP debut in 2012 when he subbed for Casey Stoner for two races.
